We’ve all been through many cold and flu seasons during the winter months. So we go to the pharmacy to pick up some Vitamin C Supplements. Unfortunately, not only does it seem to rarely work, but it also often gives us gastrointestinal distress.
Well, what if we told you that there is a better form of Vitamin C known as Liposomal Vitamin C? In this article, we’ll be going over how a Liposomal Vitamin C supplement provides superior effects to standard oral Vitamin C.
First, let’s go over:
What is Vitamin C?
Vitamin C, also known as ascorbate and ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin that is either naturally found in various foods, or added to fortified foods, and is commonly sold as a dietary supplement. One of the reasons that it is added to foods and sold as a dietary supplement is because human beings are unable to self-produce Vitamin C within our bodies.
Long ago, we were able to but, due to mutations in something called the GULO gene that made it non-functional, modern humans no longer have that ability. As a result, we have to rely on our diets and often supplements to get the necessary amount of this important nutrient.
But what makes Vitamin C so essential? This essential nutrient is required for the production of certain neurotransmitters, such as nor epinephrine. This neurotransmitter and hormone helps the body fight stress as part of its fight-or-flight response, and plays important roles in your sleep-wake cycle, emotions, memory storage, and attentiveness and focus when performing a task.
Additionally, Vitamin C supports the synthesis of collagen, which serves as a crucial structural element in the skin, bones, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels. Collagen also plays a vital role in wound healing. Vitamin C is also one of the most important antioxidants and immune system supporters in the body, helping fight off many infections and diseases ranging from the common cold and flu, to more serious and life-threatening diseases such as heart disease. Now that we know some of the essential functions that Vitamin C has in the body, let’s look a bit more closely at how Liposomal Vitamin C compares to standard oral Vitamin C Supplements, as well as intravenous Vitamin C.
Liposomal Vitamin C Technology
If you’re looking for ways to increase your Vitamin C levels, then you should consider a Vitamin C supplement. More specifically, you may want to consider Liposomal Vitamin C. But what is liposomal technology anyway? Liposomal Technology uses micro-sized fluid-filled liposomes to protect and deliver nutrients directly into the cells and tissues of the body. These liposomes are very similar to human cells, which makes it easier for them to be transported within the body. As a result, nutrient absorption is greatly increased, and there is less intestinal discomfort than with using standard oral Vitamin C supplements.
Liposomal Vitamin C Technology Provides Different Advantages, Including:
- Micro-sized encapsulation that protects against the harsh acidity of the gastrointestinal tract
- Increased delivery to cells, tissues, and organs
- Higher absorption rates and bio availability than other standard oral supplements
- Noninvasive compared to intravenous supplementation
- Lower Liposomal doses provide the same effects as high-dose standard oral Vitamin C supplements
- Helps put nutrients to use by the body faster
- Prevents gastrointestinal distress usually experienced with standard oral Vitamin C supplements
For reference: Bio availability measures the amount of the administered dose that reaches the systemic circulation or bloodstream unchanged.
In regards to nutrients, more specifically, this is measured as:
- Their availability in the intestinal lumen, or the inside space of the tubular structure that is the intestine, for absorption
- Absorption and/or retention in the body
- Utilization by the body
One study published in the Nutrition and Metabolic Insights journal in 2016 investigated the efficacy of oral Liposomal Vitamin C Supplements compared to standard oral Vitamin C and intravenous Vitamin C. This study compared the effects of these three Vitamin C supplementation methods in the treatment of ischemia-reperfusion injury. For those who don’t know, ischemia-reperfusion injury is a condition in which blood flow is restored to the damaged cardiac muscle, or myocardium, after a period of reduced blood flow or lack of oxygen supply.
Back to the study:
On four separate, randomly ordered occasions, 11 people received a placebo, 4 g of standard oral Vitamin C, 4 g of oral Liposomal Vitamin C, or 4 g of intravenous Vitamin C.
The results? The 4 g of oral Liposomal Vitamin C supplementation produced greater circulating concentrations of Vitamin C than standard oral Vitamin C, but less than intravenous Vitamin C. Additionally, oral Liposomal Vitamin C supplementation provided a similar degree of protection from ischemia-reperfusion injury as standard oral Vitamin C and intravenous Vitamin C.
Furthermore, oral Liposomal Vitamin C promotes greater bio availability than standard oral Vitamin C while avoiding the common side effect of gastrointestinal distress. Simultaneously, oral Liposomal Vitamin C doesn’t have the same disadvantages as intravenous Vitamin C, such as high cost, availability, and convenience.
Sounds promising, right?
What Experts Have to Say About Liposomal Vitamin C?
When discussing the effectiveness of Liposomal Vitamin C compared to intravenous Vitamin C, many experts have stated that oral Liposomal Vitamin C seems to have similar clinical effects to higher doses of intravenous Vitamin C.
That is because Liposomal Vitamin C is more efficiently absorbed into the cells, where the Vitamin C can exert its effects. Micro-sized liposome’s are able to go directly into the lymphatic system, and absorb into the immune cells that surround the gut. If liposome’s are taken in sufficient quantities for long enough, then they will eventually get into the systemic circulation.
In short, their statements can be summed up as:
- 1. Liposomal technology provides rapid and complete absorption of Vitamin C when taken orally.
2. Liposomal Vitamin C provides deep intracellular delivery of Vitamin C on a mitochondrial level, as well as to the endoplasmic reticulum and nuclei.
3. Liposomal technology provides enhanced intake of Vitamin C by the white blood cells.
4. Liposomal Vitamin C delivers Vitamin C to the cytoplasm and sub cellular organelles without consuming energy.
5. By comparison, both standard oral Vitamin C and intravenous Vitamin C require considerable energy consumption before
Vitamin C reaches the cytoplasm.
For reference: The endoplasmic reticulum is a network of sacs and tubes that produces, processes, and transports many biochemical compounds for use inside the cell and outside of it. Cytoplasm is the fluid within a cell that surrounds the nucleus. It helps with the intracellular movement of genetic material and products of cellular respiration. It contains the mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, and nucleus. Clearly, Liposomal Vitamin C supplement is worthy of serious consideration for its potential benefits in recovering from flus and colds faster and improving their symptoms.
Why You Should Consider a Vitamin C Supplement?
Vitamin C is an essential nutrient that serves many important roles in the body, with many of those functions due to its antioxidant and immune-boosting properties. You should take the necessary steps to keep your levels of Vitamin C within a normal range to keep your immune system strong and ready to fight infections.
